ABOUT WENDY
Starting from Scratch
Wendy Davis is an attorney and former Fort Worth City Council member who has lived in Tarrant County her whole life. She, her sister and her two brothers were raised by their mother in Richland Hills, and at age 14 Wendy started working to help out the family. After high school she attended Tarrant County Community College and then, through a combination of hard work and scholarships, Texas Christian University. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college and in 1993 Wendy graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. Wendy is currently the CEO of Republic Title's Fort Worth Division. Wendy is also a former five-term member of the Fort Worth City Council, representing the downtown area, the Medical District, the Texas Christian University area, as well as many neighborhoods on the city's south side. She raised her own two daughters, Amber and Dru, in Tarrant County. Amber recently became the second person in Wendy's family to graduate from college, and Dru is a college freshman.
Moving Our Community Forward
While a member of the City Council, Wendy made economic development and transportation her top priorities. She has been at the helm of numerous public/private partnerships which have revitalized neighborhoods while minimizing the cost to taxpayers. Examples include the Montgomery Plaza redevelopment, the Magnolia commercial corridor and the Medical District. Representing a central city district, Wendy concentrated on creating incentives for redevelopment and securing funding to repair declining infrastructure in central city neighborhoods. Wendy was also actively involved in strategic planning for Tarrant County's future.
A Commitment to Service
In both her public and private life, Wendy has been passionate about giving kids a chance to succeed in life. She assisted in creating the Mobile Summer Recreation Program, which gives working parents a safe, educational place to send their children during the summer. The program, which served 75 kids in its first year, is geared at keeping kids off the streets and giving them the tools to succeed in school and in life. This year the program will serve 750 children - at no cost to taxpayers.
She is also active in Summerbridge, a tutoring and mentoring program which helps disadvantaged kids who don't see college as an option to prepare for and compete for scholarships to college preparatory high schools.
Wendy's service to our community has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2007 "Woman of the Year" by Women in Transportation, the "A Change of a Lifetime Community Award" by the Cenikor Foundation, the "Proud Mother Award" by the Greater Fort Worth Real Estate Council for extraordinary commitment to central city revitalization, the "Chairman's Special Award" by the United Hispanic Council of Tarrant County for a lifetime of contributions to the Hispanic community, and many more.
Bringing Change to the State Senate
Throughout her eight years on the City Council, Wendy worked closely with the state legislature on the issues most important to her constituents. And she has seen time and time again that the interests of people in our part of the state are simply not being represented in Austin. "I don't think it's any secret that the legislature in this state is failing us. Health care costs are skyrocketing, our transportation problems get worse all the time, and utility rates are through the roof. I know that I can do a better job standing up for Tarrant County in Austin." - Wendy Davis
