Press Release

Voters, Business Leaders, Public Servants Unite Behind Wendy Davis

Oct 17, 2012

FORT WORTH – On Wednesday, Senator Wendy Davis expressed her appreciation for the broad cross-section of voters, business leaders and public servants who have formally endorsed her re-election in Senate District 10 and oppose her opponent, Mark Shelton.  The widespread support for Senator Davis reflects her efforts to create jobs, support public schools, keep college tuition affordable, and her fight to lower homeowners insurance and residential electricity rates and to combat predatory practices of payday lenders.

Senator Davis has run a positive campaign focused on the value of education and the difference it made in her life.  She has highlighted her successful efforts to pass a bipartisan Rape Kit bill, which helps law enforcement test DNA evidence to identify, capture and prosecute rapists, bringing justice to victims and making our communities safer. Senator Davis' opponent, Mark Shelton, voted for drastic cuts in public school funding and was one of only 8 extremists in the legislature who voted against her Rape Kit bill.

Mark Shelton opened his campaign with a false negative attack on Senator Davis and has continued with negative attacks to divert attention from his failed record on public education, to mask gimmicks and accounting tricks used dishonestly to assert that he voted for a “balanced”  budget and to hide from his vote to bring justice for rape victims.  A Shelton attack ad was fact checked by WFAA Channel 8 and judged to be untrue.  However, Shelton has continued with his false attacks.

Shelton's failure to support law enforcement and the citizens they protect is evident by the decision of law enforcement associations in the Senate District rejecting his campaign and fully endorsing Senator Davis.  Randle Meadows, President of the Arlington Police Association stated plainly, “Senator Davis’ commitment to protecting our communities in Senate District 10 is unquestionable, as is evidenced in her work on the Rape Kit bill. Mark Shelton owes Wendy Davis an apology for his desperate and false campaign ads. And he owes the citizens of Tarrant County an apology for turning his back on survivors of sexual assault.”

Rather than own up to his irresponsible vote against the Rape Kit bill, Shelton has attempted to raise questions about its funding.  Shelton's response is a dishonest dodge.  The Rape Kit bill does not require any additional state spending.
